The very first step when starting dw for the first time is to set
up your site.
For additional help with the following lesson obtain a Studio MX
2004 text and go to Lesson 1 for Dreamweaver. The text will provide
screen shots that will help you set up your site.
Dw will prompt you to define your site if no site already exists.
The Site Definition window will open. Here are the steps to set up your
site.
1. Name your site. Call it Dreamweaver. Click Next
2. Do you want to work with a server technology. List some of the
server technologies that dw can work with.
If your web hosting site provided this type of service or you had
your own web server with this type of technology you would select yes.
This would allow you to test your web pages dynamically by having them
interact with the server just as the real web page would. In your case
you will accept the default and say No. Click Next.
3. How do you want to work with your files? The default option is
recommended for a reason. It is best to create and edit pages locally
where you can preview and test them before publishing them to the web.
Accept the default.
Where do you want to store your files? This is an important question.
In your case you want to store all files in your home directory, your
H: drive. Click on the folder icon to browse to your H: drive and then
click on the new folder icon to create a folder and call it Dreamweaver. The path to your root folder should be displayed in the window
now. Click next.
4. How will you be transferring your files from your local folder
(on your H: drive) to the web server (the remote site). Typically this
is done via FTP, in our case you will select None. Later you will setup
dw so you can upload your files to your web server. After selecting
None click Next.
5. Review the Summary information. If everything is correct click
Done. If changes need to be made click back to change any previous settings.
Congratulations, you have now set up your site and can now begin to
create web pages.
