Determining Your House Size
At this point you have a rough sketch of your house. You will now determine the size of each room. Refer to the basic room size handout to determine the dimensions of each of your rooms. Add a label to each room that indicates the size of the room. For a bedroom you might write 10' X 12' for a typical bedroom size. Try to minimize hallway space and dead space that cannot be used. One thing to keep in mind when determining room size is the size of standard building materials, most materials come in lengths that are multiples of 2. Studs are typically 8ft, 10ft, 12ft... It costs just as much to make a 9ft room as it does a 10ft room but the 9ft room would result in extra work and wasted material ( you need to cut the 10ft stud to 9ft). Also remember that walls are about 6" thick.

Once you have your room sizes determine the overall dimension of your house. Add dimensions to the outside of your house. Dimension each room and then add an overall dimension. Remember this is still just a sketch. Look at the examples posted on the walls to see how to dimension a house.

Homework

Continue to refine house design. Check your dimensions to be sure you have included the thickness of the walls in your calculations, assume most walls will be about 6" thick.
