Application Layer (SMTP)
SEND: Write a 6-9 word message to one of the students listed above using their name. Pass the message onto the transport layer (they have scissors)
RECEIVE:
When you receive the message from the transport layer read it out loud to your group. .
Transport Layer (TCP) - need scissors
SEND: break message into packets - three words at most. Number the packet in the TCP header. Cut out each packet and hand each packet to internet layer one at a time.
RECEIVE:
put the packets into order and then pass to the application layer.
Internet Layer (IP)
SEND: add the appropriate IP address to each packet - hand packet to link layer
RECEIVE:
check the IP address, if it matches yours hand it to your transport layer
Link Layer Students - they have the ethernet cables -
SEND:
pass one packet at a time to another Link Layer student - they have the cable.
RECEIVE: pass packet up to the Internet Layer.
-
Packet Order. Does it matter whether the packets of a message arrive in order? Explain how this set of protocols handles that.
-
(Portfolio) Missing Packets. What should happen if a packet goes missing? Who (which layer) would handle this? What action would they have to take? And what additional information would be needed in the packet in order to handle it?
-
Corrupted Packets. Suppose there’s some kind hardware glitch that corrupts one or more bits in a packet? Can this be detected? What action should be taken in this case? What additional information would be needed to handle this issue?
-
(Portfolio) Security/Privacy: As the packets are being transmitted through the network, can people other than the sender and receiver read the messages? What methods can we use to protect the message?
