Foley Project

Today you will begin your Foley Project but first you need to know what Foley is and what Foley artists do. Use this video, Foley Artists: How Movie Sound Effects Are Made to answer the following questions. Copy and paste the questions to a Google doc and submit your answers to classroom.

1. What is Foley?

2. What is the purpose of the sync line?

3. What is the most frequently added sound in movies?

4. Besides the water and glass used to imitate the freezing ice what else did the Foley artist use?

5. What was Randy's job in this process?

Now for the Project

Your job today is to record 10 different sound effects using your phone as the recorder.
Step 1 - Download and install a recorder on your phone if you don't already have one. Here is a list of free recorders for Android or iPhone. If you are using a Chromebook you can also use a free online recorder as well. The problem with the Chromebook is it is not nearly as portable as your phone.

2. Practice using the recorder so you know how it works and how to get good audio.

3. Now record your sounds. You have five required sounds and then you will add five sounds of your choice to come up with a total of 10.
- Two walking sounds
- Three sounds you create with your voice or body (but don't hurt yourself)
- Five more sounds your record of your choosing. Come up with a theme or think of a certain scene you might have in mind. Maybe for your Econo Rap.
When you are done you should have a total of 10 sound recordings.

4. Send these files to your google drive, email them to your self or use another method to get the files uploaded.

5. Now use an online audio editor to put all 10 clips into one audio file. Here is a list of 6 free online audio editors that you can use. The Bear Audio seemed to be the easiest editor to use and it allows for multiple files. Since these are online you don't need to install anything. Editing audio is very much like editing video so you can transfer those skills to this new task.

6. Once you have all the clips in one file trim any excess so only the portion that contains the sound you want is present. Export the file and submit to Google classroom - Foley Project.
