Composing your Shot - the Rule of Thirds

Read through the Rule of Thirds article and answer these questions. Although this article is about photography the rule also applies to video shot composition as well.

1. What is the rule of thirds?

2. Why are the points of intersection so important when composing a shot?

3. How can the rule of thirds help express motion in a film?

4. Look at this sample image (the image of the lake) and explain how the composition of the image follows the rule of thirds.

5. Give an example of a shot you would take at school and how you would compose that shot to follow the rule of thirds.

6. Watch this video about the rule of thirds - notice in the examples how they are setup so the most important part of the image is at the intersection point.
