In this exercise you will work as a team to create a series of shots that demonstrate commonly used film shots that involve camera movement. Here are the specs for each project that you will create for each type of shot.
Specs - these shots will be graded on the specs and the smoothness of the movement so take several shots to get it just right.
Drive By Shooting - this demonstrates several of the following shot types
Tripod Tricks
Project 6 -
Panning - panning tutorial - looking for slow smooth pans
Remember to record 3 seconds before the camera begins moving and then continue to shoot 3 seconds after the camera stops moving.
• Camera rotates horizontally but does NOT move position
• One pan shot that shows a place - 15 seconds - remember slow and smooth
• One pan shot that follows a person - 15 seconds
• Try the rubber band trick and see if it helps, make this an additional shot if you wish.
Project 7
Tracking - camera moves with subject, keeping the subject in view. (trucking shot)
• Track your subject for 10-15 seconds
• One tracking shot should be smooth as you track your subject - use a chair with wheels or dolly
• The second tracking shot should be with the camera person walking as you track the subject. Take this shot outdoors. Try to keep your shot smooth as you walk. Someone should walk beside the camera person to make sure they don't trip or bump into anything.
• Subject must be human
Project 8 Tilt Up, Tilt Down - tilt up examples
• A slow tilt up of an outdoor scene, move the camera as smoothly as possible (~10 seconds)
• A slow tilt down of a different subject (~10 seconds) - tilt down example
Project 9 Character Dolly - list of several types of dolly shots
• Camera moves in on your subject, often referred to as a push-in. Try to make the camera movement as smooth as possible. Your shot should end up with a CU or ECU. Use the camera track if you have a chance.
Subject may be a person
Project 10 Contract Dolly
• The camera and the character move closer together at the same time. Take it slow so your shot can be about 10-15 seconds.
• Perform a second contract dolly shot using an outdoor scene.
• Subject must be human
Project 11 Another Camera Movement Shot of your choice
• Try TWO new camera movement techniques such as the ones in Monopod Trick, How to Dolly without a Dolly or Getting the Most our of Your Monopod
Project 12 Crane shot - create at least two different crane shots. Try one starting high and moving lower and another one starting low and moving high. Shoot in two different locations.
Project 13 - Putting it all together. Create a story using a variety of shots, include shots with movement to tell your story. Here is an example - Idiot with a Tripod - notice the mix of shots, some with motion some that are static. Notice the timing and sequence of the shots. This story must include music that adds to the story and must be at least 2 minutes long.
Deep Green - uses a variety of camera movements to make the video more dynamic.
