Computers - Ethical and Social Issues

 

    Review pages 47- 56 (blue book) to answer the following questions.

  1. Take a look at the timeline on page 48. Compare the Personal Computing Era with the Interpersonal Computer Era. What do these two eras have in common? How is the last era different from the previous one?
  2. What are some of the benefits of networking computers together?
  3. When and where did the Internet begin?
  4. Is the World Wide Web and the Internet the same thing? Explain. Support your answer with concrete details.
  5. What is a thin client? Where would it fit on the computer heirarchy scheme discussed earlier in class?

Implications: Social and Ethical Issues

  1. "Computers and networks are transforming the world rapidly and irreversibly. Jobs that existed for hundreds of years are eliminated by automation, while new careers are built on emerging technology." (page 56). List several careers that no longer exist or are on their way out because of the developments in technology.
  2. Check the list of the top 10 up and coming careers. What percentage of these careers are IT based? Of the IT based careers how long have they been around?
  3. Of the social and ethical issues listed on pages 56-59 which one interests you the most? Why?
